We drank and ate exceptionally well at Schwarzer Adler @schwarzeradler_oberbergen in Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl, especially the Schweinfleisch (image 3). And not just french wines – I was very impressed with their own Spatburgunder from the Schlossberg vineyard (image 5). I can thoroughly recommend!

To finish a great day, a visit to La Rochepot, up the road from St Aubin, to meet Emmanuel Sainson @domaine_emmanuel_sainson. You might expect a range of Côte De Beaune, wines but Emmanuel has taken over the Julienas vineyards from charismatic philosopher: vigneron Vincent Audras. All made in amphora!

Rippon, with its beautiful setting overlooking Lake Wãnaka, may be the most photographed vineyard in New Zealand, and one of the most mesmeric in the world.

Nick Mills kindly laid on this exceptional vertical line-up of the family's wines going back 30 years. The only unfortunate aspect was that our New Zealand contributor, @janeskiltonmw was out of the country, so could not be present. Hence I am impinging on her territory by writing this up.

Wãnaka means a teaching place in Māori, and courtesy of Nick Mills I certainly was taught a great deal during my brief visit.
