‘What were the differences relating to the Côte de Nuits compared to further south? The September heat may have been a little less extreme, but in any case the parameters were slightly different because typically the ripening process is a few days behind the Côte de Beaune. It was therefore not quite so necessary to react urgently in those first few days of September.

The choices were to pick before or after the rain (a fairly heavy storm in the evening of 12th September) or to do a bit of both. A rough analysis or the domaines I visited in Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée is that about a quarter finished picking before the rain (Arlot, Faure, Garcia, Thiriet, Eugénie, Anne Gros, Comte Liger-Belair and Pascal Mugneret, while the remainder were divided fairly evenly between those who started before and finished after (especially in Nuits) and those who did not start until after the rain break (especially in Vosne).’

‘This report covers the northern half of the Côte de Beaune, starting with a section which regroups Monthelie, Auxey-Duresses, St-Romain and producers located in the Hautes Côtes, before continuing via Volnay and Pommard to Beaune and the sector around the Hill of Corton. ‘The 2023 harvest in the Côte d’Or is not like anything I have seen before. For many producers it was the largest crop on record, followed by the smallest in 2024 (for red wines, at least). It was also the hottest year overall on record, yet the wines do not behave like a hot vintage. The full report on the growing season can be found HERE.

The salient points are as follows:

- A very mild winter
- Frost risks avoided
- Flowering in excellent conditions at the end of May.
- Regular but not excessive rain
- Hailstorm on 11th July, mainly affecting St-Aubin and parts of Meursault
- Variable weather in July and August
- A burst of extreme heat to coincide with the early September harvest’
