The 6th generation of the Barat family, Angèle (winemaking) and Ludovic (vineyards), took over from their father Michel in 2012, but continue to work in a similar fashion. There has been some evolution with better tractors and fewer chemical interventions. The domaine covers 22ha, mostly in and around Milly but also incorporating some vines in Fleys through their mother’s side. The vines are picked by machine and vinified entirely in stainless steel as Angèle feels that oak masks the terroir. This is a sound source of sensibly priced wines.
Two cuvées get cheerful nicknames: Le Padabu (no abuse) for the Petit Chablis, and l’Umami, a special bottling from 40 year old vines in Côte de Léchet, just made in classical Chablis vintages such as 2014 and 2017. It is kept in tank for 18+ months and bottled with the wines of the subsequent vintage.
