Domaine Marc Morey & Fils
Updated Sep 2022
Historical
The estate was originally established by Fernand Morey in the 1930s. His son Marc Morey, born in 1927, took over in the 1950s. His son-in-law Bernard Mollard came to work at the domaine in 1977, taking over the following year. Marc Morey officially retired in 1987, after which his son Michel Morey took out his share (one-third) of the vineyards to form Domaine Morey-Coffinet. Sabine Mollard joined her father in 2003 before he retired in 2006. The domaine is supplemented by some purchased grapes, labelled as just Marc Morey.
Viticulture & Vinification
The vines are run on the basis of lutte raisonée, with ploughing. The grapes are picked, minimally crushed before pressing, then settled briefly before going to barrel. The lees are stirred once a week before the malolactic fermentation, less frequently thereafter, and indeed less overall in warmer vintages. All the wines used to be bottled before the next harvest but now most of the premiers crus are given an extra few months in tank before bottling in January.
Vineyards
The fact that the Bâtard-Montrachet has just been replanted in 2019 confirms the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Virondot as the estate’s flagship wine. It is all but a monopoly – the final 0.08ha is owned elsewhere but the Marc Morey team runs the vineyard, buys the grapes and blends them into their village Chassagne-Montrachet. The wine always shows minerality from its location high on the hillside, but this is combined with impressively dense fruit.
