🥂 Tasting Beechworth Chardonnay: Australia’s David region with the power to compete at Goliath level 🥂

'If David were to defeat Goliath in the modern day, he’d probably celebrate with a nice glass of Beechworth Chardonnay. It’s a wine from a locale small in stature, but it wields the power capable of bringing the big dogs to their knees.'

@tomjkline tastes 22 Chardonnays from the region redefining what Australian Chardonnay can be. A fascinating report on an under-the-radar area that nonetheless includes such Australian powerhouses as Giaconda, Savaterre, and Fighting Gully Road.

1 & 2: Charles Magnien in his beloved Cazetiers vineyard, before heading to Pierre Duroché to try a range of his excellent 2023s.
3: Just leaving a few minutes to enjoy in Domaine Fourrier’s Combe aux Moines.
4: Not a bad way to finish a great tasting at Domaine Rossignol Trapet

6: Next stop, Domaine Rebourseau with new technical director Sylvain Pabion
7: A few Gevrey gems at our last night dinner...
8: And I added in this ancient gem from Au Bon Climat, still in fine condition

🥂Mastering Maturity: a François Jobard Meursault Vertical🥂

‘At a time when far too many winemakers are talking up the necessity of making their white Burgundy to drink young, what a joy it was to try a range of mature wines from François Jobard, arguably the finest master of Meursault which is designed to age for the long term. Not many white wine verticals go back as far as 2000 – that is where this one started! And the wines just seemed to get better, and even younger, the further back in time we went.
All the bottles were opened shortly before the tasting, for verifying. My original plan was to serve the wines from oldest to youngest, in case the most mature bottles might be fragile. It didn’t take me long to reverse that decision. There was not a lot of difference in colour from start to finish, as it happens, but the older wines had such a sense of structure to them that it seemed they could only grow in stature with a little aeration. I did not regret my choice.’

Happy Birthday Faiveley! An amazing day celebratin Happy Birthday Faiveley! An amazing day celebrating the 200th anniversary of Domaine Faiveley. A tasting in the morning of vintages ending in 5 going back to this sublime 1935. Then a brilliant and frequently emotional dinner. Francois Faiveley spoke wonderfully about the family and was given a spontaneous standing ovation for over five minutes.

And then this amazing news was announced. The family are donating a plot of Clos de Vougeot to the Hospices de Beaune, enough to make three barrels a year. A wonderful gift!

🍷Discoveries in the Côte de Beaune🍷

‘This spring, I visited a few domaines which were new, or nearly new to me. They vary in size from the embryonic Domaine Briotet d’Aprigny to the much more substantial Vignobles Ludovic Pierrot which has emerged out of the former Domaine Michel Clair. Not included in this quartet is Domaine Emmanuel Sainson, based in La Rochepot in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, since his wines are all from the Beaujolais where he has taken over the Domaine Haut de la Combe in Juliénas on the retirement of Vincent Audras. I will attach those wines to my annual Beaujolais report.
Each of the four producers below make wines in interestingly different styles. I will leave you to work your way through them to see where you might find a match for new opportunities.’
