As usual, Laurent Ponsot prefers to show his wines only after bottling, which for the 2022s happened between January and July 2024. I tasted with him in November last year. He revealed two bits of information. The first is that he has been able to take ownership of 0.25ha of Griotte-Chambertin in exchange for surrendering his sharecropping lease on the rest of his Griotte-Chambertin, plus the small plot of Clos St-Denis and the Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes to the new owners of Domaine des Chezeaux, Charles van Canneyt and his wife.

His other bombshell was that he has now decided on his retirement date – which will be when he reaches his 102nd birthday. So don’t hold your breath. I don’t promise to report on his retirement party, though if all goes well I shall be a mere stripling of 99 years at that point.

These are excellent wines with a glossy veneer on top of a more solid, classic structure. Note the tasting order of the reds, which started out by classification and then after the village wines we switched to geographical, staying in one village for 1er and Grand Cru before starting the next.

2022 Bourgogne Blanc ‘Cuvée du Pierce-Neige’, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 White

2022, Bourgogne Blanc ‘Cuvée du Pierce-Neige’, Laurent Ponsot

Fuller lemon yellow, with a good weight of fruit on the nose, firm apples and acidity, plenty of energy, a little warmth. This is my first 2022 after several weeks of 2023 tastings, and though it is impressive it is less joyously attractive than the younger vintage. Drink from 2025-2027. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Meursault ‘Cuvée du Pandoréa’, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 White
91

2022, Meursault ‘Cuvée du Pandoréa’, Laurent Ponsot

Made from 15 plots around the village. Mid yellow. Firm and nutty, with a generosity of white fruit across the palate, excellent acidity, this is building slowly and steadily in the mouth, with a fine mineral backbone and aftertaste. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 White
92

2022, Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot

Pale lemon yellow. This has a stricter bouquet, too much energy to be described as leaner, but the hillside limestone is very evident. An electric white stone fruit on the palate, with a little more flesh evident at the finish. The oak is well integrated. This will need time, but shows great promise. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 White
92

2022, Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot

Five plots blended. Pale in colour, softly scented but the characteristic firm style of the Ponsot white 2022s works less easily on a Charmes than a Blagny. Very slightly confected white fruit with a lemon rinse. Good wine, but not quite my idea of Charmes. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 White
93

2022, Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot

Mid lemon yellow. A light touch of biscuit from the barrel along with a more refined and slightly herbal fruit. Showing more class than the Charmes today. The fruit opens out more generously on the palate, with an ideal level of ripeness, excellent acid balance and a long and refined finish. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 White
93

2022, Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot

A fuller yellow colour, with the expected additional fruit richness on the nose. Full-bodied as a Perrières should be yet with some minerality behind, indeed a saline finish. Not quite as complete as the excellent Genevrières, but a sound Perrières with a good future. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 White
94

2022, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot

The produce of 12 plots in all! Pale lemon yellow. A very classy nose. The oak plays its part, but the terroir much more. A light biscuit and cream note, a bench of energetic white fruit, then a crystalline mineral touch to finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Bourgogne Rouge ‘Cuvée des Peupliers’ Nov 2024 Red
88

2022, Bourgogne Rouge ‘Cuvée des Peupliers’

A ruby touch to the colour. Very pretty bouquet, this is high class pinot, a little bit floral but more importantly vivid red fruits. Plus, a notable structure at the finish, so this will need a little more time than many a Bourgogne. Drink from 2026-2028. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Cuvée de l’Aulne’ Nov 2024 Red
91

2022, Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Cuvée de l’Aulne’

More crimson than purple in colour. The nose is beguiling, strawberry slightly to the fore, but with roses in full bloom as well. Excellent tension on the second half of the palate, with useful acidity, and a long fine aftertaste. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Chambolle-Musigny 'Cuvée de la Violette', Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
89

2022, Chambolle-Musigny 'Cuvée de la Violette', Laurent Ponsot

Quite a full crimson purple, though the bouquet is currently on the reductive side. There is fair tension on the palate, plenty of fruit in the mouth, but the 2022 Laurent Ponsot Chambolle is not together today. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Vosne-Romanée 'Cuvée du Cerisier', Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
90

2022, Vosne-Romanée 'Cuvée du Cerisier', Laurent Ponsot

An attractive pale purple, with a lighter rim. The bouquet has not yet woken up after the bottling. Medium density with some of the lifted class of the appellation and a little spice to finish. Nicely balanced, a Vosne of medium concentration. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Vosne-Romanée Beaux Monts 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
92

2022, Vosne-Romanée Beaux Monts 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot

A new contract in 2022. Not one of the deeper colours. An interesting soft strawberry bouquet, good acidity, now some raspberry, good acidity, and consistent. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Echezeaux, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
95

2022, Echezeaux, Laurent Ponsot

Mid crimson. A certain warmth and charm, then a significant depth of concentrated red fruit backed by an attractive layer of oak, now some darker raspberry fruit, with well managed tannins and just the right acidity. Harmonious, more than lacy. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Clos de Vougeot, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
94

2022, Clos de Vougeot, Laurent Ponsot

Made from 10 plots, from all around the Clos. Medium dark crimson. The fruit is relatively deep on the nose, without quite expressing any detail, but this all comes together very well on the palate, a very harmonious and even accessible Clos Vougeot, with a little trace of blood orange, and retaining nonetheless a sense of its identity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red

95

2022, Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot

One of the fuller colours and with a gorgeous bouquet, complex and with a superb sensuality built on top of a backbone with adequate tannins that are fully covered by the fruit. This is absolutely delicious, yet with a discipline for the longer term. Drink from 2028-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
94

2022, Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot

Alongside a good mid purple colour, the bouquet comes across very much stricter than the Charmes. The oranges I associate with the iron rich soil of Sentiers are there in the background, along with an impressive intensity of pure red fruit and fine length. A Morey-side Chambolle with backbone. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
5
97

2022, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot

Mid crimson. A little bit of coffee, a few floral notes and herbs, gorgeously sensual, so much going on here, the waves of velvet fruit cover the bone structure which is absolutely, and necessarily, present, and provides the promise of long ageing. Yet it is so gorgeous young that one could be tempted! This Bonnes Mares will probably tighten up shortly, but for now it is showing an incredible aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Gevrey-Chambertin En Ergot 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
93

2022, Gevrey-Chambertin En Ergot 1er Cru, Laurent Ponsot

A fine mid ruby purple. The nose does have some of the savoury strawberry character of this part of the world, but is less evident than the fruit which sweeps across the palate which is sweeter rather than savoury, but still dominated by strawberry notes. A long and even quite elegant finish. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Charmes-Chambertin, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
94

2022, Charmes-Chambertin, Laurent Ponsot

The fruit comes from both Charmes and Mazoyères. An even pinkish ruby. Stylish and chiselled on the nose. There is plenty of mid palate energy, then the oak comes into play rather more forcefully. Little alpine strawberries, with persistence, but no more than medium density. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
96

2022, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot

An attractive ruby with a paler rim. The bouquet has an elegant floral style on top of fresh red berry fruit, raspberry rather than strawberry. Not the weightiest but really well put together with multiple layers. Some of the red fruits become deeper without quite turning into their black counterparts, the tannins are refined yet adequate, and there is a useful point of acidity to finish. Suave, complete, harmonious and detailed. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
94

2022, Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot

Good clear crimson purple. The bouquet is a little dour to begin with but soon smartens up, and there is a wealth of fruit right across the palate. The volume almost hides the detail and the finesse of the appellation, though that comes out more at the finish. A softer style in the end. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Chambertin Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red
97

2022, Chambertin Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot

A strikingly fine ruby crimson colour, with a bouquet showing the finesse that I did not quite find in the Clos de Bèze. Gorgeously dancing little red fruits yet with an impressive reserve behind them, this hits all the right notes. An easy winner between the two. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red

98

2022, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot

Glowing ruby red. A really magnificent, high-class nose. Everything is perfect about this wine. The intensity, rather than density of the fruit, the balance between fruit, acidity and tannins, the sense of refinement in harness with sensuality. A superbly long aftertaste, laced with salinity, perfect seasoning. Laurent Ponsot on the top of his form. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Clos St-Denis Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot Nov 2024 Red

98

2022, Clos St-Denis Grand Cru, Laurent Ponsot

Attractive mid purple. The nose is less immediate than the Griotte, but on the palate this is once again an incredibly noble wine. Less sensual at the moment but with a noble headiness to the fruit, allied to an excellent backbone. Fascinating how different in style the two wines are, but both pretty much as good as it gets in Burgundy. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Beaune ‘Cuvée du Noyer’ Nov 2024 Red
92

2022, Beaune ‘Cuvée du Noyer’

Fine mid ruby purple, with an engaging pure fruit nose, strawberry and raspberry together, joyously juicy in a fashion not always the case in 2022, constructed on a fruit-acid balance rather than tannins, with a long and refined aftertaste. Laurent complains that this appellation is as difficult to sell as un cerceuil a deux places – a coffin for two people. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Nov 2024.
