The domaine formerly known as Martelet de Cherisey is now officially the Domaine Comtesse de Cherisey but is subtitled Hélène et Laurent Martelet. Since taking over at the family domaine in 1998, the Martelets have steadily brought back into their own hands the holdings which had previously been farmed out elsewhere, culminating in 2016 with La Pièce Sous le Bois. The winery building in Blagny have been entirely renovated and extended. Red wine production has diminished – there is just a small corner of La Genelotte left – but the whites have gone from strength to strength.
Laurent Martelet was in forestry before moving to vines, which gives him a passion for how things grow as much as for the resulting wine. It also has practical value, since the domaine owns the woods above the vineyards – they have been able to source oaks to be turned into barrels, acacia for making the pickets which are needed in the rows of vines, and they can also cultivate their own vine cuttings and root stocks. The vineyards have been certified organic from 2020.
