There is a tendency to focus on the grander, more expensive wines in Burgundy, despite the fact that the region has much to offer at all levels. After all, half of all Burgundy production is classified as regional appellations and only 2% at grand cru status. Among the regional Bourgognes, are various ‘denominations of geographical origin’ or perhaps sub-districts might be an easier terminology, indicating a location where the wines may be of greater interest than a standard blend. One such is the Côtes du Couchois.
Three years ago I made my first visit to the Couchois sub-district which fills part of the geographical gap between the southern end of the Côte de Beaune and the Chalonnais, visiting four producers as part of the annual ‘Ronde du Couchois’, albeit during the circumstances of covid restrictions. Background to the region can be found in that report: Travels in the Couchois. This is not a region which is about to be ‘discovered’ as a future source of great Burgundy wine, but it is an interesting hunting ground for wines which deliver a sound quality:price ratio. Quite a few retail locally at under 10 euros a bottle, though plenty more merit something a little more ambitious. The trick with the reds is to locate the wines made with good pinot plant material, which remains more the exception than the norm here.

This August I once again hooked up with Dennis Sherman, who lives in the region and has planted a vineyard at his Domaine du Cromey. We retained our preferred two producers from 2020 (Caroline Bellavoine and Domaine Royet) and added five more. Domaine du Beauregard was a particularly interesting discovery.
Since my first visit there has been action on one important front: a dossier has been submitted to allow Bourgogne Côte du Couchois for white wines as well as reds, a development which I think would be thoroughly merited.
Domaine du Beauregard
Hide

Jérôme, who has been at the domaine since 2017, and his sister Stéphanie (since 2021) are the 5th generation of the Dupernon family at the Domaine du Beauregard. All their vines are in the commune of St-Sernin-du-Plain, and are all classical low trained vines, which are ploughed or left with a cover crop depending on the sector and slope. They have no specific certifications, but try to be as natural as possible in treatments which include phytotherapy (plant-based treatments). Interesting and well-made wines here, well worth a visit.

2022, Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Anges, Domaine du BeauregardLes Anges is grown on sandstone lower down the slope, and receives nine months in barrel with 20% new wood. Pale lemon and lime, the wood is nicely integrated. An interesting saline touch which I like, and the balance throughout is well judged. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted Aug 2023. 2022, Bourgogne Aligoté, Domaine du BeauregardThe domaine’s third Aligoté has been vinified and aged in a barrel made from acacia, which gives less body and overt wood flavour, perhaps instead a floral touch. 2021, Bourgogne Côtes du Couchois, Domaine du BeauregardMade from 75 year old vines with 100% new wood. There is clearly greater depth of fruit on the nose compared to the regular Couchois bottling and no evident oak. This works well on the palate because of the fruit intensity. Domaine Caroline Bellavoine
HideOne of my preferred producers from my previous trip, Caroline Bellavoine confirmed the quality of her wines again this time, though she was showing the rather more complicated 2021 vintage. These are individual wines, sometimes by conception (see the Carpe Diem cuvée) and always in style. These are graceful, non-aggressive wines, with personality.

Guillaume Bouthenet
Hide
The Bouthenet family hail from Couches, though Guillaume is now installed in Cheilly-lès-Maranges. He took over a small Mercurey domaine in 2010, with both red and white vineyards in Mercurey (and 1er Cru) and Rully (also with 1er Cru). However, he seems to be sold out of most wines so he was just showing a rosé made from grapes grown in the Var, sold as Vin de France under the label Dirty Pig, a Mercurey 2020 and a Bourgogne Côtes du Couchois 2021. Notes on the latter two below.

Domaine Simon Gaudet
Hide
The domaine was founded by Eugene Gaudet in 1885, followed by René, Jean, Gilles and now Simon. I tasted with Gilles Gaudet, though from 2022 all the labels are moving to Simon’s name. The domaine is in St Sernin-du-Plain, but curiously we did not taste any Couchois wines. The Gaudets do have some, but the 2022s had not yet been bottled. We tasted instead some generic wines and their range from Côte de Beaune vineyards.
In both colours Simon and Gilles Gaudet like to avoid sulphur until after the malolactic fermentation. Most of the wines are bottled relatively early and the reds are made with destemmed grapes, as picking is done by machine. Competent wines in both colours, though my preference leant towards the reds, worth a look as I suspect prices are reasonable.

Domaine Royet
Hide

The former Domaine Royet has changed its name to Vincent Royet, now that he has fully taken over from his father Jean-Claude. They are now operating from completely new premises on the edge of Couches, where the extensive cellar (which was ready for the 2022 vintage) enables them to take a more parcellaire approach to vinification and ageing.
I might personally prefer a touch less new oak on certain cuvées, but these are consistently well-made wines which are very fairly priced. All the whites use DIAM 5 closures.

Crémant de Bourgogne Brut Nature, Domaine Vincent RoyetA blend of 60% Pinot noir with chardonnay at 30%, a bit of aligoté and a fraction of gamay. The base wine is 2021. My experience of this wine is to drink it young. Pale lemon colour, fresh nose, a little citrus, light egg reduction, no great body but pleasing. Drink from 2024. Tasted Aug 2023. 2022, Maranges Les Clos Roussots 1er Cru, Domaine Vincent RoyetA rich bright fresh purple. Clearly more fruit weight here and stuffing, though the new wood imposes a touch more. (50% new wood, 30% one year old. The fruit should win through though, as this finishes very well. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted Aug 2023. Star rating: 100pt score: 88-90 |

2022, Bourgogne Cotes du Couchois Phoenix, Domaine Vincent RoyetA new cuvee this year from 6 year old vines, a mix of terroirs, planted with pinot tres fin ATVB selection. Lovely little bunches, says Vincent, quite different from the standard here in Couchois. A different colour already, much more purple. Very attractive rich raspberry fruit, a dry tannin but fine, and enough acidity. Long and promising. 85% new wood hardly seems to show alongside the lush fruit. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted Aug 2023. 86-88 | |||||||
2022, Bourgogne Cotes du Couchois l'Expression, Domaine Vincent RoyetSlightly denser in colour than the regular Couchois 2022 with a more backward nose, the dark raspberry fruit playing alongside more evident wood (one third new, using the 300 litre size from Stockinger). Two minutes in the glass helps the nose. The oak comes out at the back of the palate but accompanies rather than dries the fruit. After that, it is your choice whether to stick with the regular Couchois or wait for this. Perhaps in two to three years the oak will integrate fully. Drink from 2025-2027. Tasted Aug 2023. Star rating: 100pt score: 86-88 |

2022, Bourgogne Cotes du Couchois, Domaine Vincent RoyetA full bright crimson red. The nose has not reached the explosive fruit stage of the 2021 yet but Shows promise. Quality fruit, cherry backed by raspberry, with tannins both from the terroir and the wood, but the sunshine of the vintage has brought with it a volume of fruit to cover the structure. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted Aug 2023. Star rating: 100pt score: 86-88 |

2022, Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Domaine Vincent RoyetHalf stainless, half older wood. A palish cherry red with a light berry fruit on the nose, light to middleweight with some firm tannins. Lacks a little suppleness in the fruit. Drink from 2023-2024. Tasted Aug 2023. Star rating: 100pt score: 84 |

2021, Bourgogne Cotes du Couchois l'Expression, Domaine Vincent RoyetThe Expression cuvée is made from grapes from far more interesting slopes, and I would recommend trading up. A little more depth of colour, 35% new wood damps down the fruit without showing its own character too much. The tannins stay a little rustic but there is a darker cherry fruit too, and this will benefit from a little more ageing. Drink from 2023-2025. Tasted Aug 2023. Star rating: 100pt score: 86 |

2021, Bourgogne Cotes du Couchois, Domaine Vincent RoyetPale pink to ruby colour. The nose is an explosion of fresh cherry. Still a few firm tannins on the nose but serve chilled on a warm evening and it is lovely now. 13% with the help of Dr Chaptal. Drink from 2023-2024. Tasted Aug 2023. Star rating: 100pt score: 85 |

2018, Maranges Aux Artaux, Domaine Vincent RoyetFrom magnum. The vineyard has been pulled out since and is being replanted in white. Medium to bright red. Very slightly leathery on the nose, perhaps a more rustic terroir. A little bit sweet and sour on the palate with some tannins to finish. A little on the chunky side, but agreeable. Drink from 2023-2025. Tasted Aug 2023. Star rating: 100pt score: 86 |
Jonathan Séguin
HideWe stopped by this young vigneron in the hamlet of Nyon, at the foot of the hill below St-Sernin. He is aiming to make wines of fairly immediate appeal at fair price points. Evidence on the day suggests that he has a good local following.
