‘In late May our Burgfest group met once again at the Hameau de Barboron to taste the whites from 2020. This was just about the hottest driest summer on record (not something that 2024 has come close to challenging!) but it was clear from early on that the white grapes resisted the conditions relatively well, managing to maintain good acidity without sugar levels running riot. The first bit of good news from the tasting is that there were very few wines with TCA cork taint this year, and not many showing signs of oxidation either. The great majority of Chablis producers use DIAM or equivalent nowadays – those providing more than a single wine without were just Messrs Duplessis, Picq, Pinson, Michel, plus some of the Collet wines. In the Côte d’Or, take-up is less extensive. Those who have taken the DIAM path include Bichot, Bouchard Père & Fils, Jean Chartron, Fabien Coche, Marc Colin, Darviot-Perrin, Vincent Girardin, Camille Giroud, Louis Jadot, Comtes Lafon, Hubert Lamy, Domaine Leflaive, Olivier Leflaive, Benjamin Leroux, Château de Meursault, de Montille, Prudhon and a few more with just a single wine in the tasting.’

‘“The birthplace of Australian wine” is a term so often touted by the Hunter Valley that it’s become platitudinous. And while its truth is anchored in importance from an historical perspective, more critical are the wines hitting the glass right now. And make no mistake, the Hunter holds up. More than simply being marked by the romance of history, the region has proven itself time and again with its elegant and age worthy wines. Whether it’s the medium bodied and iodine-laced Shiraz wines, the often immortal Semillon wines, or the fuller bodied Chardonnay offerings; the Hunter Valley has firmly stamped itself as a region of quality and substance, with a material history in support.

This isn’t to say, of course, that its prominence and popularity haven’t waxed and waned over its 200 odd years. The claws of big business sunk deep into the region for a time, bringing with them their inherent damage to heart and reputation. The whims of fashion have danced around the Valley over recent years, too, keeping the region on its toes in competing with others in Australia. Throughout it all, however, the Hunter Valley has continued to fine tune what it does best. As is increasingly proven, staying the course is a reliable recipe for success.’

‘It seemed clear from the outset that 2014 was going to be a successful year for white Burgundy. Not too hot, enough sunshine to ripen the grapes while the wider than usual window for choosing when to pick meant that nobody called their harvest timing wrong.

For the reds, the picture was much more complicated: hailstorms in the Côte de Beaune and the drosophile suzukii in the Côte de Nuits. For a full report on the growing season and harvest conditions, see my 2014 Vintage Overview.

In the intervening years, my opinion of 2014 as a white wine vintage has not only held up but if anything gained ground. For quite a while the wines seemed to be getting younger and fresher, rather than evolving, and only now are they coming into their full majesty. We were not disappointed on the day, with eight 5-star wines out of 34, a much higher percentage than I usually award.’

‘I am coming to appreciate the Mâconnais more and more. The south starts here, with a feeling of sunshine pervading the countryside and Roman style tiles roofing the houses – which you do not see north of Tournus. Yet the effects of global warming – which are just as prevalent here as anywhere else in burgundy – seem to be having less effect on the wines than further north. Pouilly-Fuissé & Co are accustomed to sunshine. It is part of what we expect from such appellations, and the grapes and wines seem to be able to assimilate the extra warmth without too much change in style – which is much more of a challenge for, say, Chablis. There are some brilliant wines here, many of which will be capable of significant ageing.

This is the most substantial report that we have produced on the Mâconnais, and is the fruit of two visits to the region plus a number of tasting encounters during the Grands Jours de Bourgogne. The majority of wines come from the excellent 2022 vintage, with some embryonic 2023s and occasional older vintages. Some of the tasting notes of 2023s have no ratings attached, where there remains residual sugar.

The broad brush of the style of the two vintages is similar here in the south of the region to the rest of Burgundy, though with occasional differences in detail. 2022 was mostly a less generous crop in the Mâconnais due to slightly more pronounced drought conditions, June excepted, which made for a much lower yield of juice out of the grapes here than further north. There were some hail storms to contend with as well, notably affecting parts of Vergisson (in terms of yield rather than quality). Overall, I find the wines have an impressive density, are not too heated in style, with alcohol degrees barely above the norm, and will mostly make impressive bottles for longer cellaring.’

“I probably pick Chardonnay a bit earlier than Grandpa did”, says third generation Mount Mary winemaker, Sam Middleton. It’s a striking remark, not for the minor viticultural refinement, but for the heart warming reference to a bonafide legend of Australian wine in Dr John Middleton as ‘Grandpa’. It’s no surprise, however; heart is very much a part of the modus operandi at this iconic Victorian estate. Mount Mary is a bastion of staying the course, of sticking to one’s guns, of having the courage of one’s convictions. Whatever the adage, the story of Mount Mary’s evolution over 53 years is defined by mindful massaging rather than major modification, all with a view to best capture their special place in a bottle. It’s a welcome foil to the garish shapeshifting of many others around them and, needless to say, it’s worked out.

“It’s funny to think about Mount Mary Chardonnay”, continues Sam. “In the 80’s everyone tasted it and thought ‘Oh, that’s so tight and lean’. And nowadays they taste Mount Mary Chardonnay and go ‘Whoa, that’s got a lot of flavour, that’s got a lot of concentration’. I feel like our style has stayed quite steady, but things around us have changed.”
